Welcome to a new page on our parish website:
As Christians, we PRAY and STAY INFORMED, for LIFE!
40 Days for Life Prayer
Many of our parishioners will remember keeping vigil on Bank & Queen Streets in 2019 and 2020, during the 40 Days for Life Prayer. This vigil, which takes place near abortion clinics in 576 cities worldwide, annually saves hundreds of babies and families from the mental and spiritual pain of abortion. In Ottawa, 26 parishes participated by keeping one-hour timeslots during the vigil days. Last September 30, 26 volunteers from our St. John the Baptist parish family kept this vigil, the youngest being two months old, pictured above. Diakuju – Thank you!
As we come out of lockdown and begin Lent, the Winter/Spring 40 Days for Life campaign begins on February 17 and ends on March 28. Ottawa has not signed up to participate with an on-street vigil at Bank and Queen streets this spring, but that does not hinder us from praying and fasting during this Lent for an end to abortion. As churches ease restrictions, we have the opportunity for communal prayer for the precious unborn. We pray for an end to the COVID pandemic as we also remember the innocent babies who are killed through abortion on an on-going basis. 2021 Canadian National March for Life
The annual National March for Life on Parliament Hill is just 3 months away. Please reserve the date of Thursday, May 13, 2021 to prayerfully participate, either in-person, or virtually – as restrictions allow – to uphold Catholic Church teaching on the sanctity of life from womb to tomb. The USA held its annual March for Life on Friday, January 29 this year.
Here in Ottawa, preparations are underway for this annual event, which begins with prayer vigils in various locations, masses and liturgies on the morning of the march, and a full program on Parliament Hill, followed by a march through the downtown core. In years past, up to 25,000 people from across Canada have participated. For the last 15 years or so, the concluding event of the day has been the Moleben, our Eastern-rite prayer service, sponsored by the Sheptytsky Institute of Eastern Christian Studies and led by our clergy and bishops, in which a few hundred people would typically participate.

In January, Campaign Life Coalition premiered the video Obsessed: Canada’s Coercive Diplomacy, an eye-opening expose of Canada’s abortion policies in the developing world. The program features a dialogue between David Mulroney (former Canadian Ambassador to China and former President of the University of St Michaels College in Toronto) and Obianuju Ekeocha, African author, filmmaker and human rights activist. MAID in Canada
Euthanasia and “Medical Assistance in Dying” (MAID) measures are being expanded in Canada. Please see: https://www.campaignlifecoalition.com/events/ for updates and action items.
In 2019, The World Medical Association (WMA) reaffirmed its opposition to euthanasia and assisted suicide, and yet, our government is set on confirming expansion of these practices. For a better understanding, please read “The ‘Normalization’ of Euthanasia in Canada: the Cautionary Tale Continues” in the World Medical Journal: https://procathedral.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/World-Medical-Journal-Article.pdf . PLEASE PRAY for government leaders to respect the God-given dignity of life, and to stop expanding already over-used MAID measures.
